How Do I Get to Medan?

Once your booking at the Telo Island Lodge is confirmed, we are more than happy to help arrange airfare and associated accommodations as you make your way to our surf resort.

Flights typically are routed through either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia or Singapore. From each location, you are then flown to the north Sumatran city of Medan, Indonesia, where you will be met on arrival by our representative at  the Medan airport. Depending on your arrival time, you will either be taken to the JW Marriott for an overnight stay or taken directly to our Cessna Grand Caravan charter aircraft for departure to the Telo Island Lodge.

Do I need a Visa for Indonesia?

As of March 2004, nationals of the United States, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Finland, Hungary, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Norway, France, Poland, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Taiwan must pay $USD25 for an entry visa on arrival in Indonesia for a 30-day tourist Visa. This is done at the airport counter prior to immigration clearance.

PLEASE NOTE: Most airports do not have ATMs available. Please bring a minimum of $USD25 to pay this fee.

What About Travel Insurance?

ALL guests must have full comprehensive travel and medical insurance, which should include at least a MedEvac option and compensation for lost charter days due to unforeseen circumstances or emergencies. Please let us know if you have questions on specific coverage options. This is in additional to SOS onboard MedEvac coverage.

How Many Boards Should I Bring?

If you do not wish to use any of our ECOBOARDS, this depends entirely on how much excess baggage you are willing to pay for! Most people bring 2 boards. The normal board you ride at home is fine and perhaps a slightly larger semi-gun. If you are going to bring an extra board we suggest a replacement for the board you will use the most as it is not uncommon to break boards. Remember to bring extra leg ropes, cloth covers to protect your boards in the boats and tropical surf wax.

What Do You Suggest I Pack?

Besides yourself and your surfboards, we recommend you bring the following items:

  • $US25 cash to purchase an entry visa when you arrive at customs in Indonesia. NOTE: Visa entry fee MUST BE PAID IN CASH and it MUST BE PAID IN $USD and there are no ATM machines between the plane and customs. Therefore you need to bring $USD25 cash with you!!
  • Airport departure tax rates are payable in Rupiah. Departure, airport and airline taxes are the responsibility of guests.
  • Passports, airline tickets, travel insurance information, itinerary and other travel documents.
  • Cash. Indonesia Rupiah, $US or $AUD. You will need cash for your Indonesian Visa ($US25) on arrival, Indonesian Airport departure tax, personal telephone calls, additional meals in transit, etc. Cash for everything other than the entry visa can be exchanged or withdrawn from ATM’s after you pass through customs in Indonesia.
  • Two COLOR photocopies of your passport (photo page). This is required to be handed into management on check-in.  The local port authorities require these to register you as a visitor/tourist in the region.
  • 2- 3 pairs of board shorts
  • Some t-shirts / shirt or shawl for women (singlet’s are inappropriate in major towns & Muslim areas)
  • Loose long clothing (to protect against mosquitoes if you go outside at night)
  • Booties (for surfing and beach combing over reefs)
  • Sand shoes (or booties for island exploration)
  • Solarez – the type with rovings in it
  • Spare leg ropes
  • Long-sleeved rash shirts
  • Tropical surf wax
  • Spare fins and keys, spare plugs and screws if you have FCS system
  • Sunscreen and lip balm 30+
  • Sunglasses
  • Insect repellent
  • Sun hat
  • Toiletries
  • A good sense of humor (grumpy people will be sent home on first available flight)
  • Camera, film, re-chargers, adapters
  • A re-usable/non-disposable drink bottle to fill up from water bubble in lodge. (We try to reduce and eliminate single-use plastic water bottles polluting the island and ocean.)
  • Fishing and diving gear (we supply these but you may prefer using your own)
  • Soft cloth board cover (to protect your board from impact, sun and wax damage during boat transfers to breaks)
  • First Aid Kit. We have a fully equipped first aid kit. However we strongly suggest you bring the following items in your personal kit: pain relief, waterproof bandages and Band-Aids, antibacterial ointment, betadine (iodine), tweezers, syringes, mosquito repellent, sting ease, malaria medication, aqua ear and Cotton buds, cold/flu tablets, multi vitamins, sports rub, motion sickness medication, general antibiotics, suture kit (for stiches), personal medication. (Note: Some prescription medication requires a note from your GP before international travel. If you are taking prescription medication, please check with your GP before departure.)If you are travelling as a group, it is worth consolidating items on this list to reduce luggage.

How Many Other People Will I Be Surfing With?

Our aim is to spend the majority of our trips surfing with just the other guests. This is not always possible, but there are plenty of waves in the area and due to our extensive experience we know how to be in the right place at the right time while still avoiding major crowds. While it is inevitable that we will come across other surfers from time to time you can rest assured you will get plenty of waves.
